Courtney McBean

As a coach to young girls I am continually struck by the ability of these experiences to transform them - their attitude towards their own potential, their confidence on the field, their positive interactions with teammates and their recovery after disappointing outcomes. These experience are so powerful in girls’ lives and help shape the strong, confident women they will become.

My goal for Girl.Strong. is to help foster this confidence in young girls so that they become confident young women.

After 18 years working in the corporate world, including starting a software company, Courtney found her self searching a better way - for the right balance of meaningful work that utilizes both her business strengths and passion for outdoor adventures. After much soul searching Courtney, her husband, and two daughters made the move to Bellingham in 2011 to get back to what they love doing - outdoor adventures in the mountains and ocean.

An avid athlete since she was young, Courtney has competed in team and individual sports, and recognizes the value in hard work, pushing your personal boundaries and working together as a team. A former triathlon coach, she now coaches girls’ lacrosse and loves helping kids realize their potential through positive coaching.

Erica Quam

I see GIRL.STRONG. as a way to connect local girls with the female athletes in this area: giving girls an opportunity to learn from strong role models and mentors while developing character, learning new skills, and having a lot of fun!

My goal is to help build this community and give coaches of different sports an opportunity to come together to collaborate and learn from one another.

Erica moved to Bellingham from Pullman where she spent nine years as the Head Swim Coach at Washington State University. After a successful 15-year career in collegiate athletics working with Olympic Medalists, NCAA All-Americans, and over 200 athletes she has shifted her focus to Bellingham with one single mission: to live big, and live fully with vision, intention, and purpose.

Erica is the founder The Coaching Experience - an organization dedicated to developing athletic coaches. She supports coaches as they step into their true potential as leaders - through education, personal development, and collaboration.

In addition to coaching coaches, Erica teaches weekly yoga classes at Yoga Northwest. She instructs backpacking courses for the National Outdoor Leadership School (N.O.L.S.) in the North Cascades and Olympic Mountains. She and her wife, Kerry Gustafson get out and play - hiking, biking, skiing, & fishing - every chance that they get!
